A Brief History

The Environmental News serves as a voice for environmental issues by informing readers about upcoming events and local issues. We print 5,000 copies per issue of the Environmental News and it is distributed throughout Butte County.

In addition, BEC produces a newsletter called the "membergram" that is distributed to all current members. The first newsletter was a letter to Butte County residents explaining the new organization with two brief articles. It was titled Butte Environmental Cooperative and published in May 1975. BECs founders and early supporters were extremely proud of Homegrown, the subsequent newsletter. Kelly Meagher, general manager in 1989 wrote articles for Homegrown under the pseudoname Chester Orland. In 1988 Scott Chandler, a graphic designer, took over production of the newsletter and titled it Membergram. Chandler contributed his time and services to Membergram for seven years.
